When I want to cry
I wish I could walk in the rain
When I am unhappy
I wish I could laugh with my friends
When I feel alone
I wish I could talk with someone
When I see people going to a party
I wish I could go to that party
When I see my friends with new dresses
I wish I could wear a new dress
When I think about my future
I wish I could do anything with my life
When I see you near me
I wish I could tell you I love you
I just want to tell you
I love you, dear…

| U.S. Is Reining In Special Operations Forces in Afghanistan |
Children related to five people, including three women, who died Feb. 12 in a night raid near Gardez in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, stood at their graves last week. |
KABUL, Afghanistan — Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top American commander in Afghanistan, has brought most American Special Operations forces under his direct control for the first time, out of concern over continued civilian casualties and disorganization among units in the field.
|
| “What happens is, sometimes at cross-purposes, you got one hand doing one thing and one hand doing the other, both trying to do the right thing but working without a good outcome,” General McChrystal said in an interview. Read more at www.nytimes.com |

Good on you Katie - what a voyage - hope to see you on the Late Night Show, CBS Evening News, CNN, Larry King - grin! I’ve also learned a thing or two about being patient, open, accepting… the list goes on. But with land just beyond the horizon, I’m most looking forward to food and good company. |
I’m expecting to arrive tomorrow, with my dad and brother in Georgetown now, and soon a very special friend, Sam, who has been a constant source of support and inspiration all along the way. I’m not sure I would have made it this far without him. |
Wonder sometimes why it is so hard for those who want peace to be heard? Maybe if enough people on both sides… Wake up Ned! There I go again - dreaming of real people who want to live in peace. Israelis Against Israeli Settlements |
| Israeli police at a demonstration by about 5,000 Israeli and Palestinian peace activists in East Jerusalem on Saturday. The police kept most of the demonstrators from approaching homes occupied by Jewish families in the neighborhood. |
Protesters opposed to the evictions have gathered in the neighborhood each week for the past six months, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, which posted video of Saturday’s demonstration on its Web site and reported that there were about 5,000 Israelis and Palestinians there. One of the rally’s organizers told the newspaper, “we are all united against the ‘Judaization’ of East Jerusalem.” The newspaper said that about 200 counter-demonstrators were kept away from the rally by Israeli police officers. |
Flowers remind me of my childhood
The memorable days of spring
When nature becomes alive and wears another dress.
Afraid of fall and winter,
Flowers share their happiness slowly until
They realize it is their world.
They celebrate their return with exhilarant sounds of swallows,
Attracting butterflies and
Humans who wish to celebrate with them.
The blossoms make me want to hold them
But I fear their guards: the thorns
They prevent me from picking the laughing flowers.
Every morning they wash their faces
With dew that is like pearls
I smell the perfume and it refreshes my mind.

The ever present danger inside the country from hate and fear filled groups has grown over the last year and may soon exceed the threat from followers of Osama bin Ladin.
The Year in Hate and Extremism
|
| The radical right caught fire last year, as broad-based populist anger at political, demographic and economic changes in America ignited an explosion of new extremist groups and activism across the nation. |
| And, most remarkably of all, so-called “Patriot” groups — militias and other organizations that see the federal government as part of a plot to impose “one-world government” on liberty-loving Americans — came roaring back after years out of the limelight. |
| Now, the latest SPLC count finds that an astonishing 363 new Patriot groups appeared in 2009, with the totals going from 149 groups (including 42 militias) to 512 (127 of them militias) — a 244% jump.Read more at www.splcenter.org |
Saudi Arabia and India address terrorism in a rare meeting |
During the first visit to Saudi Arabia by an Indian premier in nearly three decades, Manmohan Singh discussed terrorism, peace with Pakistan, and trade. |
“The resumption of India-Pakistan dialogue is apparently closely linked with US moves in Afghanistan in the context of President Obama’s publicly declared intent to begin the process of US military withdrawal from Afghanistan from 2011,” P.K. Upadhyay, a consultant with the New Delhi-based Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, wrote in a paper. |
“Pakistan is a friendly country. Anytime one sees a dangerous trend in a friendly country, one is not only sorry but worried,” Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal told Indian journalists after meeting Singh, the Pakistan daily Dawn reported. The Saudi minister also said that Saudi Arabia no longer had ties to the Taliban, which were “abrogated” when the Taliban gave sanctuary to Al Qaeda. Read more at www.csmonitor.com |

“I stand with the walkers as they call for solutions to our country’s failed immigration system.” |
After walking 600 miles, Gaby, Carlos, Juan and Felipe are now entering hostile territory in the Deep South. Last weekend they encountered an anti-immigrant rally led by the Ku Klux Klan. And this week they will enter Gwinnett County, Georgia — home of Sheriff R.L. “Butch” Conway, who is notorious for his anti-immigrant stance. According to Georgia immigrant rights leader Adelina Nicholls: |
Now more than ever, as they come face-to-face with anti-immigrant sentiment the walkers need our support. Our voices can give them strength. Please let the walkers know you are with them by signing to the left and asking your friends and family to do the same. It takes just a moment. Read more at www.trail2010.org |
