US Fish and Wildlife think Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs are cute but endangered? Not so much.

there were once gazillions of the little critters on the prairie and now a few thousand - come back when there are too few left to sustain themselves and we will (US Fish and Wildlife) say ” opps, sorry.”

Amplifyd from www.regulations.gov
We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), announce our 12-month finding on a petition to list the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). After review of all available scientific and commercial information, we find that listing the black- tailed prairie dog as either threatened or endangered is not warranted at this time.
However, we ask the public to continue to submit to us any new information that becomes available concerning the status of, or threats to, the black-tailed prairie dog or its habitat at any time. This information will help us to monitor and conserve the species. DATES: The finding announced in this document was made on December 3, 2009. Read more at www.regulations.gov

“Build wealth without destroying environment
Green warrior: Sunita Narain, Director, Centre for Science and Environment

CHENNAI: Sunita Narain, Director, Centre for Science and Environment, was awarded the Raja-Lakshmi Award by the Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation here on Thursday.

Dr. Narain said the answers were in our culture and how we had built rich societies with well being, not merely wealth. The day the world understood the one message that India gave — Frugality is not poverty, frugality is wealth — it would be able to cope. Mr. Dalton drew the audience’s attention to the impending meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Obama, in which climate change was expected to play a significant role. Dr. Narain reminded the audience of a way of living, he said, congratulating the Foundation for its choice.

Palm Oil Plantations are Not Rain Forests! Grrrr!

Today’s short term gain will have us all gasping for air and pleading for relief when the dummies find out they went too far!

Rainforest treaty ‘fatally flawed’

Climate summit loophole lets palm oil producers cull vital wilderness

By Michael McCarthy, Environment Editor

Under proposals due to be ratified at the summit, countries which cut down rainforests and convert them to plantations of trees such as oil palms would still be able to classify the result as forest and could receive millions of dollars meant for preserving them. An earlier version of the text ruled out such a conversion but has been deleted, and the EU delegation – headed by Britain – has blocked its reinsertion.

Now they are calling on Britain to take a lead in restoring the anti-plantations safeguard at the final negotiating session in a week’s time, saying that otherwise the agreement – which seeks to halve global deforestation rates by 2020 – will be fatally flawed.

US Energy and Natural Resouces Maze

Scan the more than 250 bills introduced this term in to the US House Natural Resources Committee and the 49 members of the committee and you begin to understand how difficult it is to enact large strategic changes in policy and why Congress might spend time building target shooting facilities on public lands or in wilderness sites. Consider what states have representatives on the committee and those that do not. Earmarking or “pork” then starts to become clear: “Give you a new energy policy? Sure - give me a new pier for Santa Monica.” grin/groan.
