Ned Hamson's Second Line Look at the World

Watch Drone War on Google Earth

The love affair with drone Predator UAVs is spooky. The "intelligence" is sometimes good and well too often collateral damage and civilians are assassinated instead of political enemies. Everyone (including the President, news media and public) are avoiding the fact US is actively assassinating people in contravention to Presidential Executive Order, in effect si... read more

Violence and war begets war and violence, violence and war begets war and violence, violence and war begets war and violence - formula for growing the power and attraction of terrorists.

Who, What, How of Pakistan’s Taliban

Not the easiest read but a good introduction of how the Taliban in Pakistan extended and maintained control and a way to understand why many are eager to see them gone.

Pakhtun Women’s Perceptions about Religious extremism/Talibanization & Military Operation: Case Study of Malakand Division

‘Research and Renaissance’ blog is the web-debut of The Regional Academy for Research and Renaissance- a non-profit organization, registered in Societies’ Act for socio-politico-Economic research and global awareness.

the Taliban used to wear masks; their hiding their faces doubled the terror
the traditional religious leadership was killed to do away with the alternative interpretation of Jihad.
The major finding of the research is that the social contagion of the Taliban began in the name of religion; people’s sensitivity for religion was used to win their support. Later on the contagion was carried on through perpetuation of fear through Fatwas, Shariah verdicts and beheading, flogging and shooting people publiclyRead more at sahargul.blogspot.com

Peaceful vs Militant Islamic Schools - Which is Winning?

For young Muslim boys, often, the only way they may get to learn how to read and write is to attend a local religious school - a madrassa - where they learn how to read and write using the Koran as their basic book.

Over the past 10-15 years many of these schools in Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt and other countries also became sources of militant fundametalist teachings that seemed to overpower the peaceful or submit to God messages of Islam.

If the militancy is now changing, some may be due to efforts such as those noted in theĀ  article and much may be due to pressure from those who pay for the schools and its teachers - Saudi Arabia. To make sure that their view of Islam was supported worldwide and to maintain their role as “protectors of the faith,” they ramped up spending on these school some 10-15 years ago. The unintended consequences of terrorism that now threatens the Kingdom as well, has, I am sure led them to use their purses trings to reign in the militantcy teachers and urge them to just teach spiritual Islam, not politics as well.

Reforming Madrassas from the Inside Out

Nevertheless, efforts to curb militancy and extremism are gaining traction in Pakistan. Below is Amanpour’s interview with Azhar Hussain, who has been working tirelessly with Pakistani madrassa [religious school] leaders to reform the system from the inside out. Often in our effort to address education reform in Pakistan we ignore the thousands of madrassas, acknowledging them only as the problem. Azhar’s work is unique because he engages these schools as a potential part of the solution. The results are insightful, to say the least:

Few can actually walk for peace in these border lands, if for no other reason than you may get zapped by an American Predator drone. If you can join in spirit or virtually, come along!

Come See the Afghanistan-Pakistan Web

This analysis illustrates how the whole Afghanistan/Pakistan situation is a lot more complex than played here in the USA. It suits Pakistan, that Afghanistan is not at peace, or so it seems. It is hard to tell who to believe about who is in control in Pakistan or in what parts of Pakistan. But it is instructive to remember that being in control of a capital city does not mean the “central” government has all that much control. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan are not at all like USA, Canada, England, etc.

Signs of a deal between Mahsud and Pak Army

Such a deal is not without precedent. Don’t forget that the problems in Swat started with a similar deal and there have been similar agreements with Baitullah before, most recently in 2007.
If true, this deal will certainly lead to tensions with the Americans, who desperately want Mahsud neutralised. However, the Pakistanis will say that they are over-stretched in Swat, where hostilities continue and where soldiers will have to stay for some time to come to help two million people uprooted by the conflict return to their homes and businesses.Read more at circlingthelionsden.blogspot.com
