Katrina Woes Fatigue Syndrome

Why is it so difficult to stay on course? Why can no one in power keep their promises? Why does everyone keep blaming someone else? Why, I ask myself, does this seem to be related to the Congo, Darfur, Burma, Gaza, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador?

Four years after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the disaster continues.

Though many of their neighbors have given up and left town, the group gathered at McDonogh wants to remain in New Orleans because their families have lived here, as one person says, “since before the United States.”

One audience member testified that she needs immediate help. She came back to New Orleans to take care of her disabled parents, and now works as a truck driver. She detailed sexual harassment at work and domestic abuse in one of the places she lived after Katrina. “I want to die. Everybody is depressed,” she told the committee. “What do you do? Where do you go? Do you kill yourself?”

A few people called back, “No. Don’t do it.” The rest sat silent.

With So Much Hate/Fear Spewing, Obama Must Be Doing the Right Things

When the fear mongers start frothing and spittle collects on the chin, those they fear and hate the most must be doing something right - grin.

I have more faith in Americans than those who make a living trying to scare us. I believe in standing up for what you believe, what you are for but try not to get too excited by the Dobbs and Becks of the world.

Sometimes though, you just gotta let loose and say: “What are these people thinking in making such wild and untruthful claims!”

Immigrants Out to Destroy U.S., Washington Times Columnist Warns

Posted in Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Latino by Heidi Beirich on September 24, 2009

This past weekend, The Washington Times featured a column filled with apocalyptic visions of a white America overrun by a “massive invasion” of immigrants. This is certainly not the first racially insensitive column printed by The Times, but it is the first since the organization went through a thorough housecleaning in 2008 that involved the removal of high-level staffers who published white nationalists.

Kuhner also slurs Obama, calling him an “international socialist” intent on “sounding the death knell of traditional America.” Perhaps in the future, Kuhner could set aside his tirades in favor of the facts.

Stand Strong Against Hate

Put yourself on the map as not being willing to not take a stand against hate in your community.

The green on the map represents Americans standing strong against hate. The red dots represent documented hate groups.

Hate group leaders are exploiting the difficult economic times to swell their ranks, and their anti-Semitic, white supremacist propaganda is promoting violence. A neo-Nazi leader was quoted in USA Today saying, “When the economy suffers, people are looking for answers. …We are the answer for white people.”

American Right-Wing a Bit Confused?

This story was picked out of the
International edition of the Jerusalem Post. It was spray panted and not burned - as per usual with folks in Georgia who used to use burning crosses. I guess they are not really that confused - the KKK always did have more in common with nazi’s than anyone else. The most recent trend among righties is to use nazi language to attack those they think are marxists and reverse racists.

I take it back - they are still confusing. One easy thing to understand is that they are hateful and driven by fear and hate of what they see in the mirror in the morning.

Swastika painted at congressman’s office

Someone spray-painted a large swastika on a sign outside the office of a US congressman who was involved in a contentious argument over health care at a recent community meeting.

Democratic Rep. David Scott, who is black, said the swastika is the latest example of what he believes is an increasingly hateful and racist debate over reforming health care. The Atlanta lawmaker said he also has received mail in recent days that used racial slur references to him, and that characterized President Barack Obama as a Marxist.

Scott, a moderate Democrat who represents a majority-white district, said he thinks the racism is isolated but can’t be ignored. He said the swastika was probably intended as a warning but hopes it instead convinces reasonable people that it’s time to cool down the rhetoric surrounding health care.

“We must not allow it to intimidate us,” he said.

When Does Racism Cause More Crime?

When it leads police and prosecutors to ignore suspects it should have looked at more closely in favor of looking only at those who have fewer resources or political power to protect them from undue pressure and negative community opinion. See case below.

Why Putting an End to Wrongful Convictions is so Important
Brian Dugan, the real killer in the wrongful conviction cases of Rolando Cruz and Alejandro Hernandez, has plead guilty to the murder of 10-year-old Jeanine Nicarico that took place in 1983. Rolando Cruz and Alejandro had been pursued as suspects despite evidence that pointed to Brian Dugan.
Second, here is a stunning example of racism in police investigations. Despite evidence pointing to a white man, two Hispanic Men were sought as the killers.
Third, are we not supposed to trust these people, police, investigators, prosecutors, to protect us from people like Brian Dugan? Instead of letting him go free to commit other crimes? Is this not absolute criminal negligence on their part, knowingly letting a child murderer go free only to have him commit murder again?
